The Greatest Gift by Jeffrey Beaty

What do you do for a soul you love more than your own
that you know is better off in a life without your own?
You stay away and let that soul be happy and free
and look on and hope she will never ever see
how much her absence tortures you,
how much her happiness defines you,
so much so that you would rather live on alone,
alone but knowing for her the sun has shone.
