RoboCop Reboot Better Than I Expected
Some parts of the new RoboCop movie, (and not just the effects,) were much better than the original. Other parts; not so much…
While the new RoboCop IS a remake, in many ways it was its own movie that made an occasional nod to its predecessor. The new RoboCop managed to be a “true” sci-fi and not merely an action show with futuristic trappings, by exploring some current science and political issues and extrapolating them into the future.
The new RoboCop also managed a little satirical farce by taking some of those extrapolations to comedic extremes.Unfortunately some of the satire wasn’t quite as dark and ironically funny as it was in the original and often came off as clumsy. The friend I went to this movie with found the satire much more of an issue than I did. While I found it clumsy he thought it was too unrealistic. I thought, however, if anything it was a painfully true satire of today’s current press and “comedic” political news & events shows. The “real” press today is far too biased and in the pocket of one political side or the other, and the comedy shows that poke fun at current news and politics are sometimes just as biased by selectively choosing what they poke fun at.
In short the movie was MUCH better than I thought it would be and I think it was well worth seeing.
